Joel D. Burns was born in Atlanta, Georgia where he attended the public schools in Dekalb County, Georgia. He graduated from high school in 1969 and attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, receiving a BA in History in 1973. He received a JD degree Cum Laude from the University of Georgia in 1976. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Bar Association, Baldwin County Bar Association and is admitted to practice in all of the state and federal courts in the State of Georgia. He is the proud father of four children.
Laura Burns is a Milledgeville native and the youngest of Joel and Gloria Burns's four children. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 2004 with enough college credits to be classified as a Junior in College. She transferred to the University of Georgia in 2004, where she majored in Psychology and graduated Magna Cum Laude in December of 2005. After graduating from college, she worked in her father's law office as a title abstractor and administrative assistant, and in 2006 also took on a position as an administrative assistant in the office of Jeff Duffey, MD. In, August of 2007, she enrolled in Law School at Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida. Laura graduated Magna Cum Laude from Florida Coastal in December of 2009 and passed the Georgia Bar in February of 2010. She was sworn in to the Baldwin County Superior Court and the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia in June of 2010 and was later sworn into the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of Georgia in October 20, 2010. She currently practices with her father in the areas of bankruptcy, real estate, estate planning, and family law, among other general practice areas.
